Migrant workers are a special group of people in China, especially in east China. Parents along with their kids leave their home to work in east cities of China to make better living, but their busy work and generally low education level have a negative impact on their children's growth. So this organization held classes in weekends for their children, providing additional knowledge and cultivating hobbies for them. Classes include English (my group), reading, dancing, etc. Dozens of primary and kindergarten students go to class regularly.

The home visit is a part of activity along with lecturing. It is a chance to survey family background of students in order to help them grow better. Through our lengthy talk and detailed questionnaire, I have a clearer view of the status of family life of migrant workers.

Parents are usually busy, so we arranged to visit mostly at night when they finished working. High house price in Shanghai means they have to sleep in their working place. One family lived in small grocery shop, another one lived upstairs of a hardware store. Kids usually have no individual place to study, and they are easily influenced by noises around. Most importantly, their parents are unable to help them more in study. All the parents we visited do not know English at all, and their Math knowledge is greatly limited. What's more, they have nearly no time to care for kids' education.

However, to our pleasure, we found in our questionnaire, all parents supported kids' education and are willing to further their study (both boys and girls) even they may face greater financial difficulty. I am also excited to witness an organization like this can really help their kids in multiple aspects through their growth.
